Tackling the poverty in Argentina and providing design products aren’t two easy tasks, that don’t stop Argentinian designer Alejandro Sarmiento. He created the important project called “Contenido Neto” with a twofold objective: to limit the environmental impact and to create new opportunities for the low-income households who will be able to sell their wares through an NGO.

With a simple tool, consisting of a razor blade lodged in a piece of wood, a regular plastic bottle of water can be cut out into thin threads of various colors. The string can then be turned, tied, or woven to make a handbag, a shopping bag, a bloom or a lampshade (in picture).

The Sarmiento’s technique for producing plastic strings is unique. It goes beyond the principles of reusing dumped materials and almost turn any households of the program into a recycling center. For the curious, the designer has a catalog full of wild design products, just like the cooking pot turned into an ashtray.
