Up to now, the city council of Lewisham, UK has this great idea: Involving residents in keeping the southeast borough of London clean by asking them to send snapshot of areas to clean up. The idea was launched two years ago, and was a hit. More and more citizens are sending pictures from their cellphones or by email to the city council web site.
In 2007, local government of Amsterdam’s Geuzenveld district launches the same idea in essence but with a different tool. Citizens mark their ‘clean-me-this’ points directly on a Google map, which is more reliable as the technology allows users to insert a snapshot of the place as well as precisely located the spot on the city map. Us: We’d like to this initiative to get to a higher level. For instance, the city council could tell when it plans to clean the dump. Or citizens could add a priority level to their request.

Hi there. Thanks for your kind comments about our Love Lewisham site. Residents are able to use the site to pin point the problem on a map (Microsoft Earth). They can upload images from their desktops as well. Our staff use GPS enabled devices for their work so both the image and the location data gets linked to the map point. We can either e-mail, SMS, or update the web site to keep residents informed of progress. Sometimes we post an ‘After’ photo. Hope this helps.
