CocolicoEach day, one green design.

Don’t expect to a lot of those chairs. First, because it’s a prototype that Matthias Pliessnig, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, is currently working on for his masters project in Furniture Design and Sculpture. Second, because he prefers slower processes of drying the wood.

But the first result looks very promising. Smooth and seductive curves, lightness of the structure. Or to be dumber, it looks like your overweighted ass has sit on a small boat that deforms itself to bear the weight. And in fact, it’s quite that. Pliessnig’s inspiration comes from the form of sailing boats. Those are beautiful pieces of wordwork, why not reusing them.

What’s even more interesting is that the chair is made of local trees. No exotic woods, no clear-cutting ones, only those “from crowded forests that need more sun for the younger trees to grow healthy,” he said. That’s smart, as those materials are cheaper to get, foster local development and at least, buyers will clearly focus on its beautiful design.
