Every time you’re stuck in a traffic jam, you wonder why on earth the other cars emit so much bad smelling black gas. Especially when the summer has come. Especially when you’re sniffing the butt of some business vans, truly the worst.
Classic urban nightmare. While traffic jams won’t vanish soon, hope is in the air for polluting vans. An new vehicle will hit the market soon. It’s called Modec Van and covers up to 190 km (120 miles) on a single charge for a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). Not the best performances you’ve ever seen for a car, would you sentence, but imagine one second doing this with your car fully loaded with two tonnes of stuff, because that’s what this van is capable to carry under this performance.
Now, the bottleneck of electric cars: Batteries. They are designed to use modern sodium nickel chloride and lithium ion battery technologies. Those batteries aren’t the most suitable to recycling process; even with them, Modec claims its car is recyclable up to 90%.
One night of battery charge is required to get in shape. But when these become commercially available, the car maker claims the switch would be made without any motor upgrade.
Truth is, not every business van provides Modec capabilities and capacities. The manufacturer hopes companies will switch to electrical car to make their daily delivery tours. Airport transit companies, or heavy construction companies will also be interested.
That won’t be too bad, as the Modec Van is exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge, as well as will meet the criteria for the Low Emission Zone due to be operational in London in 2008.
