Eyeballing the 2006 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) is a real pleasure. And a very inspiring moment, especially when you are in a “Tell me what the near future will look like” mood, or in a “Oh we have to spare some money for this design sensation” mood.
So in the next handful of posts, we’ve decided to cover the most ecofriendly product that could hit the market, possible those you will see available in 2007.
The first is a product and a concept. “CityBike Amsterdam is a progressive public bicycle transportation system for the city of Amsterdam,” wrote the Business Week. “A fleet of GPS-enabled bikes with remote-controlled electronic locks are deployed throughout the city. Small handheld wireless GPS devices would be available for lease from various public locations.”
CityBikes lock themselves after these BikeFinders, which act as electronic “keys”, are pulled out. They then appear as “Ride me” on the citywide GPS generated map.
The system help reduce the daily traffic, manage the city-owned bike park and reduce the likelihood of theft. But you’ve got to give us a little hand on this, we cannot find how much the system cost and how many GPS Citybikes the Amsterdam City council has bought.
