In an era of disposable products, the add-value lies into the add-on services. And Japanese knife company Shimizu has a great idea. Its Toginon knives are branded “ecofriend kitchen knives”, not much because they are manufactured with recyclable materials, but because customers ‘rent’ it.
Every knife comes with two blades, and when one is blunt, users just need to remove the handle and post it back to Shimizu where their craftsmen recondition and sharpen the blade at no extra costs. During that process, the spare sharper blade can be mounted and used instead.
And when you know those knives are designed from Seki, one of the seven remaining swordmaking towns in Japan, you can expect a good quality of products and now a good smart service.
