Now that more and more architects and designers jump into the sustainable world, use solar or wind power, it’s time to think about green design 2.0 : hide those bulky devices. And if we look at the XsunX innovative research, we could already make it happen.
The Power Glass technique, as the California-based company calls it, consists of sticking thin semi-transparent coatings and films on glass. Enough to gaze at your neighbors. As claims by the manufacturer, those films could be placed “over glass, plastics, and other see-through structures” without replacing them. And it’s cheap. Converting windows into solar-power generator will cost around one fourth of the price of a now classic solar panel (from $380 up to $1,300 according to EcoBusinessLinks).
The more windows and sun exposition a building provides, the best it can get from this technique. But the technique is still in infancy, the second generation is very promising. Currently, XsunX estimates its films only to generate one half of a conventional opaque cells. Even with this reduced ratio, it could turn a public building &emdash; which features so many big glass panels and so tiny roof spaces &emdash; into a highly efficient power station. Or maybe one day, electrical cars will be transparent.
