Have you spotted the blueish line in the middle of the scooter chassis? It’s the common signal of a Yamaha scooter using its hydrogen fuel cell system. This one is the last model of the cleaner scooter series, showcased during the recent 22nd Electric Vehicle Symposium in Japan.

The model, numbered FC-AQEL, is claimed to rival other 125cc classic scooters, ie the medium to big ones able to transport two people or cruise long distances. It uses two hydrogen gas tanks (higher pressured to compress more fuel), and includes a Lithium-ion battery in case of shortage, says the release.

One prefecture in Japan, Shizuoka, at the North of Honshu island, is currently relying on fuel-cell two-wheels. It’s a beta test but sounds promising. Although it sounds the fuel-cell transportation realm start to come, this model shouldn’t be available at least until next year. But then, there would still be the big problem of hydrogen gas stations to solve.
